Nerd Heard Episode 137 – Hail Hydra!

In this edition of Nerd Heard Kenneth and Chubtoad catch up on Agents of SHIELD as well as The Winter Soldier.  They also finally discuss the season 4 finale of Walking Dead.  Danger Ace throws some science at us and we discuss this week’s pull list of comics. Little warning – there were some sound issues on Danger Ace’s end and some of the comic review section has background noise.  we apologize for the inconvenience.  Most of the episode sounds ok though, so put your ears on and take a listen to what these nerds heard!

Nerd Heard Episode 136 – Starbucks Reunion

Chubtoad went to Texas unexpectedly and while there he got the gang together to record this week’s edition of Nerd Heard at a Starbucks in Arlington.  Starbucks closed earlier than expected so they recorded the second half in the car!  This is the most unorthodox recording of Nerd Heard ever!  The nerds discuss the TMNT and X-Men trailers as well as other Nerd News.  Danger Ace hits us with some science and space while in Chubtoad’s Comic Corner the guys talk as best they can while driving, about this week’s books.  So grab a whole, triple viente  caramel machiotto and take a listen to what these nerds heard!

FORAGER: An all ages Sci-fi graphic novel.

Chubtoad here.

I have something you must do!  I have been a fan of Jimmy Palmiotti’s work for years.  His company Paper Films has put out 4 KickStarter projects that I have backed and I have not been disappointed.  You can check out these past KickStarter produced works ‘Queen Crab’, ‘Retrovirus’, ‘Sex & Violence’ and ‘Weapon of God’ at http://www.paperfilms.com/ .  If you are not familiar with Jimmy’s work, you can look to his past works at Marvel, DC and Image.  Jimmy and his writing partner Justin Gray have a great way of pulling the reader in and intriguing the mind.  Even if it is in a genre you might not particularly care for.  I am not a fan of western comics, nor have I cared much for Jonah Hex.  However, ever since Jimmy and Justin have taken over that book, I love it!

I once interviewed Jimmy about what kind of preparation he does for writing period based stories.  Jimmy told me that they do extensive research into everything that goes into a story.  For example, if they write a certain brand or style of pocket watch into a scene, they would make sure that it was a brand and style that existed in that era.  You can check out the Dallas Comic Con 2011 episode of Nerd Heard for that interview.

Now for the something I mentioned you must do!  Jimmy has a new KickStarter project you NEED to go and back.  A new all ages Sci-Fi graphic novel ‘Forager’.  This is the basic story of ‘Forager’ taken from the KickStarter page:

In an attempt to save their crumbling marriage, Glenn and Joan Travers take their six-year-old daughter Ellie, on a week’s vacation aboard a luxury Star Liner orbiting the Earth and Mars.

Soon after reaching orbit, Ellie begins hearing voices from what she calls angels, claiming they are, “coming for our world”. As the days pass, Ellie alarmingly slips in and out of a catatonic state for short periods of time, each time explaining that the angels are getting closer. Are the angels real? Is Ellie suffering a mental breakdown or are we about to make first contact with an alien intelligence?

The inspiration for FORAGER was born out of frustration with mainstream science fiction movies where nearly all alien life in the universe wants to conquer or eat us. There is very little optimism, hope or joy. So FORAGER draws its inspiration films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, ET and Starman.

These KickStarter projects from Paper Films have paid off in spades every time and in this Nerd’s opinion, Jimmy is 4 for 4 and is ready to give us a hit for the 5th time.  Get this project started here:

Go back it!  Do it!  Hurry!

Later!

Jimmy Palmiotti Sketching for Nerd Heard

Peter Mayhew aka Chewbaca needs your help!

Chubtoad here…

I was up early this morning and was looking through my Twitter feed from the past week and noticed this…

I grew up a Star Wars fan. Science fiction has always been a passion of mine.  I have known Peter since 2008 when I first started hanging with him and his lovely wife Angie at comic cons in Texas and surrounding states.   I see that Peter Mayhew needs help… I’m clicking that link.

Mayhew was born with Gigantism, which gave him his height of 7’3″ and got him the role of a lifetime, but it also comes with some serious health issues. He has great difficulty standing up straight and can’t walk without the use of a cane or wheelchair. His doctors has come up with a series of surgeries that could give him the ability to walk unassisted.

The plan is to film a documentary that follows Mayhew from his last convention prior, through the four surgeries and up until he walks again. They will also look at his life growing up in England with gigantism. They have put together a kickstarter to fund the documentary and have put together a large list of incentives that go from the smallest… promising he won’t rip your arms off… to a hand sculpted bust of Mayhew.

Chewy did not get a medal at the ceremony for his vital role as a part of the rebellion taking down the Death Star.  The least we can do for his brave service is keep him happy, healthy and able to walk.

Star War fans should check out the link and help out one of the icons that helped make one of the most memorable movie franchises of all time.
